How to Draw Landscape Plan?

By

If you don’t have access to any ready- made plans, you can draw a base plan and an existing conditions plan from scratch. All you need is some time, a few simple tools, and a helper. You can also hire a surveying firm to draw the garden plans for you, but this can be a costly option.

Whether you have ready-made plans or will be drawing them yourself, you will need to locate the exact boundaries of your property on the ground. If you plan to add or remove plants or fences near the edges of your property, it’s important to know if you are on your land or someone else’s. Neighbors can get irate, and you might even end up defending yourself in court, if you are off by even a few inches. So locate your property lines before you do anything else. If you don’t plan to make any changes near the perimeter of your property, you can probably get away with not locating the exact boundaries.

Start your search armed with a copy of your survey — or at least a written description of the boundary from the deed. Some property lines, such as those of a yard in a new condo development, are quite easy to locate. Others may be less obvious. Many properties are marked with permanent metal corner pins. If you have a survey map that shows existing buildings or features, you may be able to measure from them to find the location of the corners. Unfortunately, you cannot assume fences and other seemingly obvious markers are on the boundary.

Neighbors may have ideas (right or wrong) or more information to help you locate the corners or the lines. If you cannot locate property boundaries, it is often worth getting a surveyor in to do it for you. Despite the cost, it can save you from making enemies and expensive mistakes.

Once you have located your property lines and corner markers, mark them so you will be able to find them again easily. Metal stakes or piles of rocks work well and last for many years.
